Default Places to buy gold in sf bay area

I am planning to buy 24 karats gold coin/biscuit. Please recommend any reliable jewelers in the bay area. Also, i am planning to carry it to India. How much will be the customs duty on such things. If anybody have bought the gold and carried it to India, i'll appreciate if you can share your experiences.

I have purchased and carried this for a friend from Bhindi Jewellers in the past. They seem quite good. There is really no difference between stores on prices as they tend to be within a dollar or so of each other. Plus, I don't see any issues with carrying gold. Apart from the usual customs duty (which is quite nominal these days) I don't believe you will be charged anything extra. Also the limit is quite high these days.

"CoinBroker" in Palo Alto is reliable and authentic and he trades in bullion also found him to be little cheaper than Indian jewelers. Can find him in yahoo yellow pages. If you buy more than 1000 dollar worth - then no tax.

Buying it from the internet is the most cost effective if you are buying more than one. I use kitco.com

I usually buy gold coins from Manisha Jewelers,Sunnyvale OR from Kumar Jewelers, Fremont. Manisha Jewelers are comparatively cheaper among all stores. You can also check with Kadam & Kadam, Jewelers. More contact details are here. Make sure to buy 'Canadian Maple' gold coins.

Regarding carrying it to India, you can just keep them in your wallet.

Has anyone had any luck buying gold bullion lately? I've heard that Gold mining companies are holding back gold as there are rumors that COMEX might default, and that GLD ETF prices might drop considerably as opposed to actual physical gold. And this is causing shortage of physical gold. Kitco's site has this message
"Due to current conditions, your order fulfillment and/or shipment is being affected by delays experienced by our suppliers. Certain popular products are currently out of stock"
The only product that they are selling is the 400 Oz gold bar.

So guys, do let me know if any of you have any pointers of buying physical gold.

I always buy stuff from APMEX. Very reliable, and they usually have stuff available at better prices than most local jewelers or other online sellers. They have the Platinum and Gold 1 Oz coins available, though at a slight premium.

I wouldn't recommend buying gold jewelery from people on an anonymous forum. Another poster gave a very useful link that contains list of several jewelers in sf bay area (assuming you live in that area):

Things Indian - Indian jewelry stores in the San Francisco Bay Area

You should call up some of these jewelers for more details.

To get an idea of prices, you may refer to some of these online websites:

Saman Jeweler
Indian Jewellery

Please do you own due diligence when buying gold stuff online. Lot of chances of fraud. Also, gold jewelery prices fluctuate and change everyday, depending on gold bullion price for that day.
