Default kapil dev joins the territorial army

Just read this news. Kapil Dev is now an honorary lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army of India. This is a really patriotic step that he has taken, and would go a long way in attracting people towards this option. I think many people would be motivated by this step.

Kudos and congratulations to Kapil Dev.

Cricketer Kapil Dev, who scripted history by leading the Indian team to victory the 1983 World Cup, was Wednesday commissioned into the Territorial Army (TA) as an honorary lieutenant colonel.

Indian Army chief General Deepak Kapoor piped the badges of rank on the Haryana Hurricane's shoulders at a ceremony at the Army Headquarters in New Delhi.

“This is my second innings. Earlier I fought for the country in my white uniform. Now, I will do the same in my olive green army uniform,” Kapil said proudly.

Kapil, 50, was commissioned in the 150 TA (Infantry) battalion of the Punjab Regiment.

“I am proud I have been given this rank. It took six months for the things to materialise, with the file moving from the home ministry to the defence ministry,” said Kapil, as his wife and daughter looked on.

Kapil's induction's will help in attracting talent as the army is facing a major crunch in the officer cadre, an official said.

I think that common man in India is struggling so much just to survive that there is no time to think about doing such "moral and socially useful things" like these. One wakes up at 6, gets their kids ready for school and leaves for office by 9, struggles with traffic and road-rage and reaches office by 10:30. Works like a slave till 6-7, fights with traffic again, and reaches home exhausted by 9. By that time all that person can think about is a nice sleep to gather energy for the fight next day.

It would be nice, if Kapil Dev's gesture can push even few people to join this service.
